Volunteer story
During a three-month university placement, Tabitha has been leading workshops in pattern cutting and creative appliqué at the Skylit Centre, working closely alongside the embroidery team.
As part of her placement, she has been sharing her knowledge through hands-on sessions, introducing the group to new techniques in garment construction and textile design. Alongside teaching, she has been developing her own practice—gaining experience in leading workshops, adapting ideas for different skill levels, and working within a collaborative, real-world setting.
Her appliqué project, inspired by the bougainvillea growing outside the studio, encouraged the team to explore creativity through designing and constructing their own cushion covers. In parallel, her pattern-cutting sessions introduced the foundations of garment making, helping participants understand how designs are translated into structured, wearable pieces.
Throughout the placement, the exchange of ideas has been valuable on both sides, offering the team new creative opportunities, while allowing Tabitha to build confidence, communication skills, and a deeper understanding of design in practice.
